Welcome to our club!

-Athenaeum is a central London chess club, based in Covent Garden, with about 60 members of varying strength.

-Athenaeum was founded in 1873 and that makes us London's oldest surviving chess club.

-We compete in the London League, the Middlesex League, and various Banks and Insurance League competitions. Home fixtures are on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting at 6.45pm.

-The home venue is Dudley Court, Tenants' Hall, 36 Endell Street, London WC2. Dial 100 and press "Enter" on the security system at the entrance. Someone will open the door or come and meet you. Once inside, go through the lift lobby, turn right, and the venue is the second door on the right. The nearest tube is Covent Garden, but Tottenham Court Road, Holborn and Charing Cross are all within 10 minutes' walking distance.

-We welcome new members - please contact the club secretary, Inga Jirgensone

Athenaeum put in a strong performance against Albany, winning 6.5-1.5, meaning this is 7 wins out of 7, and look on course for promotion at the first attempt. Toni mentioned afterwards that there is a German word for a team who yo-yos up and down leagues, and this looks to be the case this season. In the end, there were a number of close games, but the opposition was outgraded and it showed as the match progressed. On a personal note, this was my first win of the season (demonstrating how to win with king and queen against king and rook with 2 seconds remaining) and it was very satisfying! Well done to everyone!

Middlesex team beat Hammersmith 4.5-3.5
Athenaeum won a tight game 4.5 - 3.5 to make it six wins in a row. The key initial moment was when the opposition won the toss and decided to go black on odds. This resulted in a see-saw match where Tonys quick win was responded to by Hammersmith getting a couple of wins and a draw with white. However, the team pulled it out of the bag again with wins by Philip, Mark and Ti sealing the victory. In a match which could have gone either way, this was an important

Athenaeum maintain unbeaten run against West London
Athenaeum produced a fantastic performance against West London to maintain our 100% record, winning 5.5-2.5. Particular credit to our debutants Alex and Tony, and many of the team for maintaining their own Middlesex League individual 100% records. The enthusiasm and professionalism shown throughout has been outstanding. Congratulations!

Athenaeum does the double over Hendon
Athenaeum maintained their 100% record in the Middlesex League this season with a 6-2 win against Hendon in their first home game. Early wins by Ian, Martin and Patrick got the team to an early 3-0 lead, and the team never looked back, with the wins finalised by Daniel, Philip and Toni. An unlucky loss by Kevin and a late loss by Alvin were the only blots on what was a great performance.

Athenaeum continue good start against Albany
Athenaeum maintained their good start against a strong Albany team. Unfortunately the match did not well with a Board 1 default, which we hope will not cost us in the competition. And with many complex games in progress, it was a question of when the first point would come. Alvin's draw meant that we had something on the board, and then an excellent win by Steve (showing great positional as well as match play in going for the win) sparked the comeback. Daniel and Ti won very attacking games, and match point was achieved by Kevin spotting a mate in 3 in an open position. The only bizarre aspect was Colin's opponent, who at mate in 1 decided to act like it was all over, then sneakily made his move and claimed a win on time! Common sense prevailed though, and I must thank the opposing captain for avoiding a potentially sticky situation. And with John in a good position at the time of adjournment, this was another successful evening. Results: Click

Athenaeum beat Hendon 3
Athenaeum made an impressive start to Division 2 of the Middlesex League, beating a strong Hendon team 7-1 to top the league. Hendon had turned up with their bottom board having a grade 148, incredible strength in depth for their third team! All of the games were close, but it was the bottom boards who showed the team the way, Steve and Bruce playing above their grade (Bruce's opponent almost 30 points higher) to record outstanding wins. Clearly deflated, Hendon then folded to allow an easy win. Other notable victories include Philip, who had given his opponent nearly half his time by nearly falling for the "new venue" trap, and Toni winning from a piece down. Daniel and Colin won under time pressure, and Mark and Alvin's draws ensuring that Hendon did not record a win, and an enjoyable trip back from Zone 3. There was a final act by a group of Hendonians shouting abuse from their car on the way back - one could only wonder whether it was the defeated Hendon team! Results
